This brief composition, written by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu at the age of nineteen, compresses in a few pages the view and meditation practice of the Dzogchen teaching. Addressed to his mother by the author at the moment of their final leave-taking, it is striking for freshness and profundity of language, and for freedom from intellectual speculation and rhetorical artifice. It is a direct message, from heart to heart. It communicates the essence of the illumination which emerges from observing the nature of one’s own mind, the spontaneous wisdom of which manifests as infinite compassion toward all beings, our mothers.
